  1. ‘After School in 21st Century’ may slow dropout rate

BAYBORO – A local nonprofit, having experienced success with its traditional after school program, has been commissioned by the state’s Department of Public Instruction to kick it up several notches.

Volunteers trained and coached by HeartWorks, will now tackle drop out prevention and student enrichment thanks to a two-year, six-figure grant.

Maria Machle, who heads the organization’s “21st Century After School Program” recently pledged a March Madness style full-court press to recruit a rock solid, reliable cadre of operatives.

  2. Misconduct alleged in local ‘08 elections

BAYBORO – A half dozen voters, addressing the three-member Pamlico County Board of Elections, described irregularities and misconduct in the ballot-casting process for the 2008 elections.

Tuesday morning, the normally placid monthly meeting of the Board of Elections took on an unusual specter as a ‘technician’ on election law, Rosemary Blizzard from the North Carolina State Board of Elections, confirmed that correcting improprieties falls directly into the laps of local election officials.

“We really have to train our voters as to what is proper as much as we have to train our precinct officials,” she said. “Everything eventually comes back to the local Board of Elections.”

  3. Supporters paint ambulance upgrades as job creators

BAYBORO – Two potentially costly recommendations, touted by an Advisory Council that oversees ambulance and emergency medical service in Pamlico County, received the unanimous endorsement of the County Commissioners Monday night.

Labeled a strategic plan, the 15-page report calls for a ‘satellite’ substation for the Pamlico Rescue Squad to be located at the Southeast Pamlico Volunteer Fire Department; and a slightly less urgent imperative to institute paramedic certification as the required level of training for almost all ambulance personnel.

  4. Is that a light at the end of Wayfarers Cove tunnel?

MINNESOTT BEACH – An elaborate nine-phase master plan to transform 40-plus acres surrounding the former Minnesott Beach Yacht Basin into a crown jewel for the town, has seen more lawsuits than sparkle since it was first proposed more than five years ago.

However, Buxton residents Bill Barley and Sarah Caudill, who bought a building lot at River View Estates -- one of 12 single-family parcels carved from a three-acre tract known as Section 8 of Wayfarers Cove -- recently agreed to an out-of-court settlement with the site’s current owner, Atlanta-based developer Minnesott Beach Holdings.

  5. Local officials look to boost census response rate

BAYBORO -- “Just 10 short, quick questions,” is the way Jayne Robb, the economic development specialist for Pamlico County, describes the once-per-decade census, which should begin showing up in mailboxes over the next two weeks.

A new wrinkle in 2010, according to Robb, is an interactive map designed to chronicle the census response rate for each incorporated area of the county, of which there are nine.

Data for cities and towns throughout the nation are also available. The website to track responses may be accessed at http://2010.census.gov/2010census/take10map/
