Dumpster for recyclable materials at the Moose Lodge Family Center in Grantsboro.

County residents are urged to recycle as much as they can, saving the landfill for trash and yard waste. On-site dumpsters are strategically placed at six locations around the county to receive an array of recyclable materials.
A sign is posted at each site, listing recyclable and non-recyclable items. Since March 16 the containers accept everything on a co-mingled basis, no longer requiring a separation of goods by category.
Jesse Bloomberg, department supervisor, said the new system is working well and there is about the same amount of non-accepted items found in the large bins as before.
“Light bulbs are the most common items erroneously deposited in the containers,” said Bloomberg. “Next are small electrical appliances and scrap metal.”
Only plastic items with numbers one or two listed near the recycle symbol are recyclable in Pamlico County. All others are considered garbage.
